Transportation might seem like an odd detail for a farmers market to concern itself with. But ensuring that all Ohioans have access to fresh, locally grown and produced food is important, and transportation is sometimes the barrier that gets in the way. And so, market operators across Ohio find themselves innovating and partnering to provide or support transportation methods other than a personal vehicle.
Here are some of the ways Ohio’s farmers markets are improving access for their neighbors.
The Clintonville Beechwold Community Resources Center (CRC) provides free transportation for senior shoppers to the Clintonville Farmers Market on Saturdays. CRC’s Executive Director, Stephanie Kim Baker, said about the transportation they provide,
“We want them to have access to healthy, fresh produce. At the farmers market they get to come and pick out their own produce from local vendors. We also want older adults to have access to socialization opportunities. The farmers market gives them a chance to get out in their community with their neighbors. They get outside and get to catch up with friends and community members.”
Liv Morris, Public Relations Coordinator and Market Manager for Common Greens added,
“Farmers markets are supposed to be spaces that are welcome to all. However, markets can sometimes be hard for older adults or folks with disabilities to attend due to location and lack of parking. Transportation like this is an excellent and invaluable way of providing everyone in the neighborhood the opportunity to shop local and engage with their community.”
The Clintonville Farmers Market also hosts Baer Wheels, a local bike shop across the street from the market. Baer Wheels provides a bike corral and bike maintenance at the market.
Would you like a free bus pass? Cincinnati Metro is a sponsor of the Northside Farmers Market and raffles free bus passes on occasion. Visit Northside’s website for more information.
Riding your bike? Great! The 2nd Street Market has bike parking and a tune up station to ensure your ride is a smooth one.
Take the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway to the Athens Farmers Market! A 22-mile paved bikeway that connects Nelsonville and Athens. The bikeway is suited for cyclists of all skills and abilities. It is built atop a former railroad bed making for easy low incline riding. We like to say, “it is the only flat thing we have in Athens County”—which is probably true.
Walk, ride or take the bus to the Downtown Youngstown Farmers Market! This market is conveniently located at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (Main Branch) and WRTA riders can enjoy a free ride, hopping off at the market’s stop. The library also has multiple bike racks for bicycle parking.
In addition, and in partnership with Healthy Community Partnerships, the market is celebrating bike month by providing $10 farmers market coupons to the first 40 walkers (or bike riders) on May 14 starting at 5:00 pm. Click here or contact rperry@hcpmahoningvalley.com for more details.

No matter how you get there, getting to a farmers market is important. Every visit to your local market supports Ohio farmers and food producers, and strengthens the community it serves. Whether it’s a five‑minute walk or a twenty‑minute drive, your trip is an investment in healthier food, a more resilient local food system and hopefully, a whole lotta fun!
Fresh air, no parking stress, and a built-in warmup before browsing produce is the perfect way to begin your visit. Bring sturdy totes or a wagon so you’re not juggling tomatoes on the way home.
Biking strikes a great balance: faster than walking and still eco‑friendly. A basket or trailer keeps your hands free and your berries intact.
Driving is sometimes the only practical option, especially if you’re stocking up or traveling from farther away. Why not grab a friend on the way? Carpooling with a friend turns it into a social outing and reduces the parking crunch that markets often face.
If your local bus or train line stops near the market, it’s a relaxed way to travel. You can sip your coffee, listen to a podcast, and skip the hunt for a parking spot entirely.
No matter how you get there, our farmers, food producers and market operators will be waiting for you!
